WRX Exhaust
As with any vehicle, improving the breathablilty of an engine will increase power. The engine needs to be able to exhale the spent gases as quickly
and as efficiently as possible and by replacing the stock exhaust system with aftermarket bolt-on pieces, this can be done on any budget. The stock WRX
exhaust system includes the downpipe, the front-mid pipe, the rear-mid pipe and the last section that connects from the rear axle to the outlet which typically includes the
muffler. These four exhaust pieces can be replaced individually or as complete systems to fit any budget.
WRX Muffler
Obviously, the stock WRX muffler is designed to suppress the sound of the engine, and it does an admirable job. However, most people who purchase a WRX
like the sound of a turbo boxer engine at full throttle and the stock muffler can hinder that aural joy. By replacing the stock muffler with an aftermarket
unit, you benefit twofold -- better sounding exhaust and a few more ponies.
There are several aftermarket mufflers available for the WRX to fit any budget. A great budget performance muffler is the one offered by Flowmaster. JCWhitney.com
offers FREE Shipping
on orders over $75.00. Flowmaster has been in the muffler business
for decades and is known for making high quality bolt-on free flowing mufflers that improve the exhaust torque and horsepower.
Cat-Back Exhaust Systems
The next exhuast upgrade that is available for the WRX is a Cat-Back exhuast system. The Subaru WRX actually has three seperate catalytic converters, one before
the turbo and two after. A cat-back system would replace the exhaust system from the rear/last catalytic converter to the outlet including the muffler. These systems
generally include all hardware and mounting pieces required to install the system yourself in your driveway. Just imagine, in one afternoon, your vehicle
could be transformed from a stock sounding wheezer to a fire breathing banshee.
There are several companies that make cat-back exhaust systems for the WRX including, Borla, HKS, Skunk2 Racing, Injen Technologies, and many others. The best selection of
performance exhaust systems
I have found online is from AndysAutoSport.com.
They are even offering Free Shipping
on Injen Technologies products for a limited time.
